Rural Education and Environment Development Centre (REED) –Nepal was established in 2000 as an Non-Government Organization registered in District Administration Office Kathmandu and affiliated with Social Welfare Council (SWC). REED Nepal was initiated by the first Everest Climbers who witnessed that children in the Himalayan region has been backward to the reach of basic level of education and felt the need to assist Nepal Government’s attempts for the improvement of overall standard of School Education in the Himalayan regions. REED’s activities focuses on imparting Quality education through Teachers’ training, child protection, Environment and climate change, Gender and social inclusion, and learning & life skills. Since then REED Nepal has been conducting its various educational programs to enhance the quality teaching and learning environment for both teachers and students.

REED Nepal has been working over a decade in the remote areas of Solukhumbu and Taplejung districts in the mountain region of Nepal where basic level of education was rare due to its geographical terrains and lack of knowledge over the importance of education to the local level. Thus, realizing the situation and the objective of the REED Nepal, it started its core activities by conducting teachers’ trainings to improve overall quality to education in all schools (i.e. 268) in Solukhumbu district and covering 30 schools in remote areas of Taplejung district. Some of the major interventions has also been carried out in Humla, Myagdi and Rupandehi Districts over the past to improve the quality of teaching and learning methods for both students and teachers.

Similarly, the major interventions includes improved classroom management, teaching material development, education delivery methodology and child protection initiatives. In addition to that it aims to support with Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) materials and school infrastructures for quality education in school. While implementing any program it directly coordinates with Department of Education (DOE), District Education Office (DEO), School Management Committee (SMCs), Parents Teachers Associations (PTAs), Local communities and Child Clubs. Further, REED Nepal has also initiated safe learning environment by constructing earthquake resistance building under “Build Back Better”. REED has also realized the need on personal and School cleanliness, hygiene, safe toilets, and community awareness about the impact of climate change & Environment degradation, and infrastructural support to the community schools. REED is committed to improve existing situations in those project areas by identifying the situation and supporting it with various new and ongoing programs.

In 2000, Rural Education and Environment Development Centre (REED-Nepal)  was established with the goal of ensuring quality education for Nepali children. REED-Nepal was founded as the Nepali NGO to consolidate the child-friendly education through teacher training program carried out by the Himalayan Trust New Zealand (also known as the Hillary Himalayan Trust NZ). Since its inception, REED-Nepal has followed Sir Hillary’s footsteps in the mountainous region: North East of Nepal, the home of Mount Everest and Himalayas.  Annually, REED-Nepal works with nearly 300 schools over 2000 thousand teachers and community members over the mountainous terrain.

REED-Nepal has a holistic approach to ensuring quality education. The organization works with teachers, school management committees, parents, and community members. With the support of its funding partners,  Australian Himalayan Foundation,  Himalayan Trust New Zealand and Himalayan Trust UK, REED-Nepal has 4 key programs.
